Here is a short list of the most common ant species you are likely to find in Colorado Springs and along the front range.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are the largest ants found in Colorado. They measure a quarter of an inch to ⅜ inch. Found mainly in forested areas, these ants like to nest in wood. Because of this, it is fairly rare to find carpenter ants creating a colony in your home. However, if your home or business have water damage to the building, you may find them nesting there.
Did you know? Ants have lived in space. In 2014, a crew of 800 “ant-ronauts flew to the International Space Station.

Pavement Ants
Pavement ants are the most common species found in Colorado. As their name would suggest, pavement ants tend to be found in the cracks along pavement. Likewise, you may find them along your stepping stone patio. Usually, people find small mounds along these cracks leading the worker ants into the underground colony. While some ants prefer sweet treats, the pavement ant prefers greasy snacks. Another common Colorado ant, the field ant, is sometimes confused for the pavement ant, but is more likely to be found in your garden.

Harvester Ants
Many Coloradans may know harvester ants better as “red ants.” In fact, the harvester ant is sometimes confused for the fire ant, which does not call Colorado home. Found along the plains and primarily in southeastern Colorado, the harvester ant makes a large mound anthill. Harvester ants eat seeds and sometimes dead insects. Harvester ants are known to “bite.” In similar fashion to fire ants, the harvester ant does not actually bite, but stings. In fact, the harvester ant can sting their victim multiple times, creating a small red mark on the skin.
