Pavement Ants

Pavement ants are the most common species found in Colorado. As their name would suggest, pavement ants tend to be found in the cracks along pavement. Likewise, you may find them along your stepping stone patio. Usually, people find small mounds along these cracks leading the worker ants into the underground colony. While some ants prefer sweet treats, the pavement ant prefers greasy snacks. Another common Colorado ant, the field ant, is sometimes confused for the pavement ant, but is more likely to be found in your garden.

Harvester ants eat seeds and sometimes dead insects. Harvester ants are known to “bite.” In similar fashion to fire ants, the harvester ant does not actually bite, but stings. In fact, the harvester ant can sting their victim multiple times, creating a small red mark on the skin.
